Flange bolting: studs and heavy hex nuts
Pipe flanges are normally joined with fully threaded stud bolts and two heavy hex nuts. A common combination is ASTM A193 Grade B7 studs (chromium-molybdenum alloy steel) with ASTM A194 Grade 2H nuts, used for high-pressure and high-temperature service.
Where corrosion resistance matters, stainless options such as A193 B8/B8M (304/316 stainless) with A194 Grade 8/8M nuts are specified instead. The line specification or the flange datasheet tells you which one applies.

Corrosion and coatings
Alloy steel studs are usually supplied plain or coated (for example zinc or PTFE-type coatings) to slow corrosion and make tightening more predictable. The coating changes the friction between threads, which affects the torque needed to reach the required bolt load, so always confirm the tightening procedure with the coating you ordered.
Sour service and documentation
Wet hydrogen sulphide (sour) service requires bolting with controlled hardness, and standards such as NACE MR0175 / ISO 15156 set those limits. If your project is a sour-service project, tell us at the enquiry stage so the correct material and hardness limits are discussed before ordering.
